Scouts give ‘birthday in a box’ to children in need
Orland area Girl Scouts provided 24 happy birthdays to children in need when they donated two dozen “birthday boxes” to Together We Cope recently. The festively wrapped boxes contain everything a family needs to celebrate a child’s birthday: cake and frosting mixes, birthday candles, plates and napkins, a birthday banner and a handmade birthday card. They were donated by Girl Scout Troops 60217 and 60459 at Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School in Orland Hills. Scout Leader Kerry Rost said that rather than ask their parents for money to finance the birthday box project, her Scouts set up a booth at a garage sale at St. Julie’s church in Tinley Park and raised $300.
Girl Scouts from Troops 60217 and 60459 created and donated two dozen "birthday boxes" for kids to Together We Cope. “The girls in both troops are dedicated to community service and they take great pride in knowing that they are bringing happiness to others through their actions,” Rost said “For the past two years my older troop has planted and harvested a garden and donated all the vegetables to Together We Cope. This was how they earned their Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award that a Cadette Girl Scout can earn.” “Contributions like this from the Girl Scouts are a thoughtful and important gesture that allows us to continue in our mission of helping families,” said Kathryn Straniero, TWC executive director. “It is especially touching when children find ways to help other children in their community.” Members of 8th Grade Cadette Troop 60459 are Meghan Mullin, Gianna Mazenko, Margaret Murphy, Grace Rost, Maryclare Leonard, Maeve Collins, Eve Moyar, Angela Grebenor, Ellie Marino, Dani O’Connell and Danielle Gentile. Members of 5th Grade Junior Troop 60217 are Nicole Todd, Kathleen Johnson, Alena Pedroza, Sydney Hellmann, Tori Quinlan, Grace Alles, Stephanie Gaspardo, Courtney Maloney, Kylie Adams, Katie Rost, Angelina Marino, Teagan Sopczak and Macy Sherwood.
